Technical Coordinator - Mine Maintenance - Welding & Fabrication

Summary

Reports to the Mine Maintenance Superintendent

The Mine Maintenance Technical Coordinator – Welding & Fabrication will provide oversight technical and supervisory assistance in the Welding/Fabrication workshop, Main workshops & Field as required to assist the Manager, Superintendent & General Supervisor – Welding/Fabrication, to ensure the safety of the workforce in the first instance. The incumbent will be accountable for developing and implementing world class welding & fabrication strategies and procedures to ensure that the TFM mining equipment fleet is maintained at a high level of availability and safety standards.

 

Essential Functions

• Align and develop work schedules that are consistent with the monthly maintenance plans, ensuring achievement of agreed minimum targets.
• Give directions on and coordinate the activities of employees engaged in the production or processing of welded components/ parts/ equipment, such as inspection, machine setting, and fabrication.
• Read, analyze, and interpret charts/plans, work orders, specifications, other relevant records and reports.
• Inspect the materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
• Take necessary actions to ensure the timely and cost‐effective repair and fabrication of components/equipment are achieved.
• Control welding and fabrication activities to achieve quality, safety, company performance and financial goals.
• Assist in administering the record of the work‐in‐progress activities for the welding and fabrication workshop.
• Supervise the welding and fabrication of components/ equipment, conduct daily safety and technical inspections and ensure compliance with TFM’s policies and procedures.
• Control and coordinate the efficient and effective usage of resources (people, tooling and equipment) to meet work targets as outlined in the work schedule.
• Control all parts/ consumables requisitioning, disposal of unusable parts/ consumables, and classification of reclaimable and reusable parts/ consumables in relation to repairs and fabrication, and ensure compliance with all aspect of the company’s maintenance information system.
• Control the effective usage of tooling including repairs and replacement.
• Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA)/ ICAM investigations when required.
• Be involved in and conduct regular tool box meetings and safety talks to ensure that employees’ fitness to work, work coordination, and safety and environment principles are put into daily practice.
• Promote and apply “Constant improvement” methods to the fleet welding & fabrication processes.
• Identify & communicate to management programs that advance the welding teams knowledge and skills.
• Oversee all workshop & in‐field repairs with national tradespeople.
• Performs other duties as required

Work Environment
Position involves work to be predominantly executed in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Resources can be limited, so the candidate must be a self-starter, have good personal organization skills for managing activities across multiple sites and in challenging circumstances

Work is in a mine or processing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see

Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday

Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required

Position Type

Travel
International travel of up to 20% is expected for this position.

 

Required Education and Experience

• Four (4) years previous experience as a Welding/Boilermaker leading hand or supervisor in a surface mining operation welding, fabrication and/or bucket repair shop
• Five (5) years’ experience in a surface mining maintenance operation
• Certified Fabrication/Welder Trade.
• Working at Heights certification.
• Overhead Crane certification.
• Forklift operator certification.
• Certificate IV or equivalent ‐ Workplace Trainer/Assessor, highly regarded
• A strong commitment to health, Safety & Environment standards.
• Extensive experience with the welding repairs and fabrication of large mining equipment buckets, blades, and associated componentry
• Strong welding/ metal fabrication skills and the ability to formulate, read and understand technical drawings.
• Ability to work in a culturally diversified workforce.
• Computer skills.
• Strong English skills, both oral and written – French language skills, highly regarded
• Conflict resolution skills
• Strong skills in all facets of the welding & fabrication trade
• Knowledge and experience with failure analysis
• Advanced knowledge of Bucket/Blade/ Dump body inspections
• Strong knowledge and experience in world class welding shop procedures
